Novelized from the screen play by Curt Siodmak and Lynn Starling of the Universal Motion Picture Produced and directed by George Waggner starring Susanna Foster, Boris Karloff, and Turhan Bey.

A Gothic melodrama inspired by GASLIGHT (1941) where an infatuated throat specialist obsessed with a gifted opera singer imprisons her in a tomb. Believing that he now free from mental conflict, he continues his medical practice.

Angela Klatt a former member of the Grand Opera chorus, hold an equally beautiful voice. The doctor plans to destroy her too by keeping her prisoner under the ploy of "treating" her while hypnotizing her into believing that she cannot sing by means of an nebulizer.

Angelas dedicated betrothed believes that the treatment is all a hoax and makes every effort to find her, even though the doctor is much bigger and tougher than himself.

The story reaches a climax during a Command Performance at the Opera House for the King and his court.

Published to accompany the film's 1944 release, Florence Jay Lewis's novelization is correspondingly comprehensible. Characterization had been kept to a minimum: what matters more are the lengthy, elaborate sentences bursting with adjectives that lead readers on towards the conclusion.

The manuscript unequal great literature, but in its mushy way it grasps readers' attention and never let it go.
