The Collection of W. F. P. Burton ~ Of course you would not want a canoe

University of Witwatersrand Art Galleries May - July 1992

Burton, W. F. P (William Frederick Padwick) 1886-1971.

In the late 1920s and 1930s, missionary W. F. P. Burton posted to Mwanza, Congo, made ethnographic and photographic collections of the Luba. These collections were sent to the University of the Witwatersrand's Museum of Ethnology and are now in the University Art Galleries along with extensive documentation, notes, and correspondence. In this catalog of the Burton collections are six essays, one of which recounts the story of Burton and his wife and their years in the Congo, written by Paula Haarhoff and Leith Haarhoff.

The other five essays are indexed separately: Nessa Leibhammer and Fiona Rankin-Smith on the history of the collection -; Rayda Becker on the photography of Burton; Barbara Barsewisch on the female in Luba art; Anitra Nettleton on Luba mboko, bowl-bearing figures; and Tom Huffman on prehistoric pottery from the Upemba basin. The catalog of the Burton collection was compiled by Nessa Leibhammer, Fiona Rankin-Smith, and Rayda Becker.

This catalogue was edited on the occasion of the exhibition presented at University of the Witwatersrand Art Galleries from Johannesburg from May to July 1992. 105 pages full with photos with artifacts in it. This significant catalogue accompanied an exhibition of the Burton Collection in 1992. It was curated by Fiona Rankin-Smith and Nessa Liebhammer and held at the Wits Art Galleries. At that time the collection was housed in the Department of Social Anthropology at Wits. Essays include biographical information about Burton, the context in which the collection was assembled as well as probing investigations of some of the objects and photographs in the collection. Included is also a complete list of the objects collected by Burton.
