The Collections of Pierre Balmain and derbers (furriers of Johannesburg) 1964, original, softcover, illustrated, period advertisement, 86 pages, A4 format, condition: as new.
in 1964 the well known Johannesburg furrier, Mr Leslie Derber and his partner, Jaye Derber, brought Pierre Balmain of Paris to Johannesburg.
The couturier, Pierre Balmain, was, along with Cristobal Balenciaga, Jacques Fath and Christian Dior, one of the young Turks who revitalized Paris couture after the German occupation.
Balmain was founded in 1945 by Pierre . From the outset, Balmains boldly feminine and opulent signature style offered a startling contrast to the utilitarian looks of the day, creating a distinctive, super-feminine DNA for the house, which relied on richly embroidered fabrics, nipped-in waists and longer, often fuller skirtsand quickly transforming the Parisian house into a favorite of both European and Hollywood royalty.
This is the catalogue of his collections in South Africa in 1964, hosted by Leslie & Jaye Derber.
(In 2011, 's ' Keerom Street, Cape Town', late of the collection of Mr and Mrs Leslie Derber sold at auction for 1.5 Million Rand.)
