'In Greece one has the conviction that "genius" is the norm, not mediocrity. No country has produced in proportion to its numbers as many geniuses as Greece. In one century alone this tiny nation gave to the world almost 500 men of genius, and the landscape remains the most satisfactory, the most wondrous, that our earth has to offer. So writes Henry Miller. He went to Greece, in the year war was breaking over Europe, to give himself a long holiday. This was not to be a trip in the ordinary sense, although he did manage to visit a number of ancient famous places. It was to be a rediscovery of what the world felt like when it was young, when the civilization we have evolved through the centuries was still unknown and unforeseen, and envy and avarice had not yet visited men's souls. Henry Miller felt that there was still in the hearts of some of the friends he made the spirit of an earlier, happier, uninhibited age. He felt this quality in the landscape too. And what he felt, what he heard, what he saw, he has shaped into an account of intense human experience.
