This historical novel is set in 1860s New Zealand. It follows newlyweds Joseph and Harriet Blackstone, who emigrate from England with Josephs mother, Lilian, in search of prosperity. They settle near Christchurch, but the harsh land quickly tests their resilience.

Joseph stumbles upon gold in a nearby creekreferred to as "the colour" by prospectorsand becomes obsessed with wealth. He keeps his discovery a secret, abandons his farm and family, and sets off alone for the goldfields over the Southern Alps. Meanwhile, Harriet struggles with isolation and regret, eventually forging her own path and identity.
