The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler by Laurence Rees. Bargain!

Laurence Rees, a BBC producer who has written several books about the Nazis, takes a closer look in this book at what many people described as the charisma of Adolf Hitler. He delves into the memoirs of those who knew the Austrian corporal during the First World War and takes us along as the odd and unusual former soldier slowly turns himself into a skilled politician. What Rees makes clear is that Hitler benefited enormously from the turbulent times he lived in, which magnified his strong points and hid his flaws. Hitler was enormously self confident and would not tolerate any opposition. He was also ruthless and manipulative. In peaceful times these tendencies could well have seen him marginalised as an anti-social intolerant bore but they came in very useful in a period where people were confused and looking for certainty. This phenomenon helps explain the charisma which lasted well into the war; absolutely self-confidence can be very attractive. The book does flag a bit though towards the end as Rees makes the same points time and time again. But it's certainly worth reading.
