Taking the role of Jackie Estacado on his 21st birthday, The Darkness begins with Jackie evading an assassination attempt by his mobster boss Uncle Paulie. Soon the player learns that Jackie is possessed by an evil spirit that has been present in his family for several generations. The manifestation of this power allows Jackie to perform incredible, twisted feats, and soon enough the player starts harnessing this power to rack up a sizeable bodycount.
As can be expected with a game of this type, the graphics are dark and brooding, and Starbreeze studios does not fail to convey the sheer brutality of The Darkness. Players work their way through the story, travelling around using subway stations and interacting with a number of characters along the way, such as Jackie’s girlfriend. The focal point of the game is the action, and this does not fail to impress, with an abundance of weapons at the player’s disposal (in addition to the gruesome darkness powers).
An intensely thrilling experience, The Darkness, while not for the faint of heart, provides a first person shooter that can be held amongst the best in the genre.
BRAND NEW, STILL SEALED.
