What is known now by scholars about the development of doctrine in the very earliest Christian community, is almost incomparably greater than before the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls and the 'secret' writings of the Egyptian gnostics. These manuscripts have thrown a new and different light on the earliest history of the Church. Although the evidence is still fragmentary and scattered, Professor Danielou has been able to reassemble and organize these sparse clues in a way that brings this very early period to life and shows beyond question that, before finding expression in its later and well known hellenistic forms, Christianity first expressed itself in a semitic form and structure. For the young Church the transition from the semitic to the hellenistic world was a period of crisis of which it is difficult today to realize the gravity. Apart from the intrinsic interest of the earliest attempts to formulate Christian teaching, this crisis gives the first volume of the series a special interest of its own and is not without relevance to present-day problems connected with the transition of the Christian faith from one civilization to another. This English-language edition of the first volume is far from being merely a straight translation from the French. With the needs of students particularly in mind, the author has in conjunction with the translator taken the opportunity to make important alterations in both content and arrangement in order to enhance the usefulness of what has already, in the French edition, been recognized as a most valuable work. Among various additions is a glossary to ease the path of any reader unfamiliar with the field.
