A novel set in rural South Africa, near the Cango Caves. It follows Connie Lambrecht, a "poor white" woman struggling with alcohol and haunting memories. She becomes obsessed with the disappearance of a young "colored" girl in a passage called the Devil's Chimney and the story of Miss Beatrice, an Englishwoman who arrived in 1910 to run an ostrich farm during the craze for ostrich plumes. The novel intertwines themes of passion, transgression, violence, tragedy, and redemption against a harsh landscape and a deeply divided social system.
