Of the first edition of 1873 it was written "A rare and early account of the Diamond Fields written by R.W. Murray at Kimberley, while the township was known as 'New Rush' ... the volume ... is illustrated by photographs which are quite unique. The accounts of the early days of the various townships and diggings are exceedingly interesting and reliable, and some of the information afforded is obtainable in no other publication." (S. Mendelssohn quoted in SABIB V. 3 p. 422)

Hardcover facsimile edition published 1979 by Historical Society of Kimberley and the Northern Cape, Kimberley Series No. 4, and one of a limited production of 500 copies. Blue leather with gilt tilting and decoration on the front, blind-stamped on the rear. It contains 8 tipped-in photographic copies of the Frank Beresford photographs that appeared in the original edition, including two folding panoramic views.
