Andrew Smith (17971872) was a Scottish-born army surgeon, ethnologist, and pioneering zoologist active in South Africa. In 1834, he led a government-sponsored scientific and exploratory mission into what was then referred to as 'Central Africa', journeying through Basutoland (modern Lesotho), Kuruman, the kraal of Mzilikazi, the Magaliesberg region, and northward toward the Tropic of Capricorn.
