Record of Its Creation and Fighting Career; Together With Some Account of the Civil and Military ... in East Africa Before and During That Period.

The author was a senior staff officer and this is his analytical account, based upon his diary and memory, of the formation and deployment of the Union's EAF. He did not take part in the fighting and does not attempt to describe it. Instead, he focuses upon the higher planning aspects of the campaign.  The book contains substantial chapters on general problems of administration, veterinary and logistical problems, and medical problems . The narrative ranges over other matters of interest - difficulties in obtaining fresh food, the difficulty of movement across areas of black cotton soil during the rains, and the work of the King's African Rifles and The Carrier Corps. A final section describes some of the outstanding personalities of the campaign and discusses why it was that von Lettow Vorbeck managed to keep going for so long.
