THE ELEPHANTS OF KNYSNA BY NICK CARTER. HARDCOVER, FIRST EDITION, FULLY INTACT DUST JACKET WITH MINOR WEAR AND TEAR AS SHOWN IN PICTURE, 1971, 220 PAGES, NO INSCRIPTIONS OR NAMES, IN GOOD CONDITION.

This book was first published in 1971, has 220 pages, 5 colour photos and large green maps inside both boards. NICK CARTER was Game Warden in Kenya and then emigrated to take the post of Warden of Kruger Park in 1966 (His other book is 'The Arm'd Rhinoceros' 1965). He was asked to do a survey on Knysna elephants in 1969. He arrived at Knysna Town, which was still a timber town, facing south towards Indian Ocean, founded by George Rex. The last human killed by an elephant in Knysna was in 1963. Knysna elephants are said to be bigger than Addo elephants. John 'Aapie' Stroebel was selected as the tracker. Nick Carter and his wife Gillian leave for Knysna. Then he finds the first elephant foot prints in Harkerville forest. Some elephants were raiding maize fields. From trackers, he could say there were possibly 5 elephants. Major Pretorius, a hunter in 1920, said that Knysna elephants were largest and that Addo elephants were tuskless, due to no forests there.
