"Grafton Elliot Smith was born in New South Wales. Early during his medical education in his native country he studied the brains of non placental mammals. He studied anatomy in London but was invited to the chair of anatomy in the new government medical school in Cairo. He returned to England to pursue his studies in neuroanatomy, his chief paper being on the corpus striatum. He returned to London to chair anatomy at University College. He revised the section on neuroanatomy of Cunningham s text on anatomy. His major contributions were in the field of comparative anatomy and evolutions of the nervous system. He also contributed to studies on the pallium and on the development of speech and of binocular vision...Smith was also known as a leading proponent of cultural hyper-diffusion theory."
