"The Fall of the House of Usher" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, published in 1839. The narrative follows an unnamed protagonist who visits his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, at his family's ancient mansion. Roderick has been suffering from a mysterious illness and invites the protagonist to help alleviate his solitude. Upon arrival, the protagonist is struck by the eerie atmosphere of the house and notices Roderick's strange behaviour. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill, and the two siblings seem to share a deep, almost supernatural bond. When Madeline appears to die, she is entombed within the house, but strange occurrences suggest she may not be truly dead. The story builds towards a tragic and terrifying climax as the protagonist discovers the dark secrets of the Usher family and the mysterious forces that govern their lives. The tale concludes with the collapse of the House of Usher, both literally and metaphorically, as the family lineage and mansion crumble into ruin. Through atmospheric tension and themes of decay, madness, and the blurring of reality, Poe crafts a masterful exploration of psychological horror and the darker aspects of human nature.
