While 4,933,000 Rugby World Cup £2 coins were produced, very few have this particular edge error, making it an extremely rare item. It was minted in 1999 to commemorate the 1999 Rugby World Cup, featuring the tournament's logo. Instead of having 'RUGBY WORLD CUP 1999' on its milled egde, this coin's edge inscription reads: 'RUGBY WORLD CUP 999' due to the missing 1.

This error makes this particular coin (one of only a few) extremely rare, attracting collector interest, and leading to high asking prices, such as over £100,000 on eBay earlier this year.

The error occurred during the minting process, either with a problem with the egde-roller, or a mistake in applying the inscription.
