The Fifth Elephant is the 24th novel in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, published in 1999. The story follows Sam Vimes, the Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, who is sent on a diplomatic mission to the dwarven kingdom of Borogravia to deliver the Sceptre of State (a massive diamond) for the coronation of the new king.

However, the mission turns into a race against time when the Sceptre is stolen by a radical group of Borogravian extremists who want to use its power to overthrow the government and restore the ancient, bloodthirsty ways of their goddess, Nuggan. Vimes must navigate a complex web of political intrigue, cultural clashes between humans and dwarves, and a conspiracy that threatens to start a war between Ankh-Morpork and Borogravia.

The book is a sharp satire on diplomacy, religious extremism, and the absurdity of tradition, while also exploring the deep cultural differences between humans and dwarves. It is widely considered one of the best entries in the City Watch sub-series.
