Published by Longmans, 1893 (Longmans Colonial Library)

Hardcover in pretty good condition for its age. Fold out map present but has some damage (please see pics). The boards are age toned and the spine has been repaired many moons ago. Contents are extremely clean except for the odd bit of age spotting here and there.

The life story and multiple significant achievements of the Norwegian polar explorer, scientist, diplomat and humanitarian. Nansen is best known for his polar travel and exploration, which he pursued up to 1896. He led the team that made the first interior crossing of Greenland in 1888. His final journey was the Fram Expedition of 1893 - 1896, an unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole utilising the east-west currents of the Arctic Ocean. He would subsequently become an important zoologist and oceanographer and in later life working to improve the lot of refugees. This book covers his early life up to 1893.
