Description:-      This is the first illustrated edition of Elspeth Huxley's classic story of an African childhood in the years before the First World War.  It has a new introduction by the author, together with photographs from het own family collection and illustrations by the  Kenyan artist Francesca Palazzo.

In this book Elspeth tells how, with her courageous mother and ever optimistic father, she trekked out to make a home among the Kikuyu in the Kenyan wilderness.  They build a grass house, ate off packing cases covered with damask tablecloths, learned to train oxen, grow coffee and understand the country and people among whom they lived and worked.
