The first 26 volumes of this series, containing 1040 hand-coloured botanical illustrations with descriptions of the flowering plants indigenous to South Africa. Published 1921 - 1947. This set contains the first issue of volume 1. No colophon to the verso of the title page and the correct attribution to plates 37 and 38. (South African Botanical Art, Marion Arnold 2001, pg 63). This first issue is thought to have superior hand colouring. The stone lithograph plates were meticulously hand coloured, often by the original artists. A unique resource of South African botanical illustration. Foxing to some of the plates and descriptive text but this remains a very good set.
