The Foreign Volunteers: They fought for the Boers (1899-1902)

 Scripta Africana Series, 1986,

Original red rexine gilt, top edge gilt; ribbon marker; ; xxxi, plus 340 clean, unmarked pages .CONDITION: AS NEW

A number of foreign volunteers joined the Boer forces in the Anglo-Boer War or South African War of 1899 to 1902. The majority of them had been living in the Transvaal before the war. Others hurried to the scene of action in South Africa and joined the Boers via Lourenço Marques (today Maputo) when the war was already under way. Their exact number is uncertain, but estimates range between 2,000 and 3,700 to 4,000 .The American, Howard C. Hillegas, correspondent of The New York World with the Boers, was probably not too far off the mark when he estimated that there were 2,675 foreign volunteers with the Boers
