When Stella Brewer first saw William, an emaciated baby chimpanzee, hysterical with fear and covered with suppurating sores, pulled from the crate in which he had travelled for the previous three weeks, her first reactions were intense pity and a determination to restore the unhappy animal to health and confidence. She had no idea then that she was embarking on a crusade that was to fill her life. But other chimps arrived in similar plight at her parents' home in The Gambia, and it soon became impossible to keep them as household pets. She found them a temporary asylum in the Abuko Reserve, which her father had established, but as the chimps grew larger and more confident, this too became impractical. Repeatedly the chimps would escape their enclosure, tear up the young trees around their home, chase the guinea fowls featherless, persecute the servals.

With the permission of the Senegalese National Parks Authorities she settled the chimps in the Niokolo Koba Park and began to teach them how to grapple with the problems of life in the wild.

Hard cover, the book is clean and in a fairly good condition, the dust jacket has damage to the edges.
