Ayn Rands philosophical novel, The Fountainhead, champions the virtue of radical individualism through the life of architect Howard Roark. Expelled from his university for his radical designs, he struggles against the collectivist culture embodied by his rival, Peter Keating, a commercially successful but derivative architect, and the influential, altruism-preaching newspaper critic, Ellsworth Toohey.
Roarks tumultuous relationships, particularly with the fiercely independent writer Dominique Francon, mirror his conflict with the world. Dominique, believing that genius is destined to be crushed by mediocrity, attempts to destroy Roark to save him from the world's degradation, only to realize his true strength. The story culminates when Roark, in a dramatic act of defiance, dynamites a housing project that had been corrupted and altered by the "second-handers" after he was promised full artistic control. At his ensuing trial, Roark delivers a powerful defense of the ego and the independent creator before being acquitted. He ultimately achieves the recognition and freedom to build on his own terms.
