The Frontier Light Horse was raised for service during the Ninth Eastern Cape Frontier War 1877-1878, but came to prominence during the Anglo-Zulu War 1879 under the command of the maverick Lieutenant Colonel Redvers Henry Buller V.C., C.B. of the 60th Rifles. After the crushing British defeat at iSandlwana on 22 January 1879, Lord Chelmsfords Army was effectively evicted from Zululand of which the Frontier Light Horse came to the fore during the desperate days that followed and remained active in north-western Zululand against the elusive abaQululsi who dominated the region.
