This publication consists of papers written at the request of and published by The Geological Society of South Africa. Each paper was written by a different author/author on a particular aspect of Southern African geology.
Presented to Mr. C.B. Anderson by the Council of the Geological Society of Southern Africa.
The published work consists of 2 volumes of papers describing the geological features of the more important mining areas in Southern Africa. The field covered by the papers is comprehensive but not all-embracing. Save for those papers dealing with occurrences of asbestos and of coastal diamonds, the contributions are confined to metallurgic mineral deposits.
The first volume is entirely devoted to the geology of the elongate basin in which rocks belonging to the Witwatersrand system occur, with special emphasis being laid on the Upper division of that system because of the economic concentrations of gold that are being exploited from various horizons within that division.
Apart from papers on gold occurrences outside of the Witwatersrand basin, on diamond occurrences, and on important asbestos-bearing areas, the second volume is confined to descriptions of areas which are the sites of mining for base metallic minerals and for platinum ores. Sites are scattered over South Africa, South West Africa (Namibia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Swaziland.
Volume I: Gold deposits of the Witwatersrand basin. Pages 625.
Volume II: Deposits of some minerals outside the Witwatersrand basin. Pages 739.
Each volume consists of a text volume and a separate volume of black and white photographic plates and relevant maps for each submitted paper. The text volume and the illustration volume are co-bound in a continuous cloth cover to form a single volume. Each co-bound volume is protected by a dust jacket (which is itself protected by a Brodart jacket cover)
Published by The Geological Society of South Africa, 1964. Discolouration of spine, marks, water marks and slight tearing on top and bottom of both dust jackets.
Hard cover: brown faux leather boards
Volume 1 shows very minimal wear to the boards. There is what appears to be very slight shelf wear and
bumping on the heel of the spine of the text volume and plates volume.
There is an inscription from the Geological Society to Mr. C.B. Anderson which has been printed by hand
in ink. It is neat and unobtrusive and was probably done by someone with draughting training.
Volume 2 shows equally minimal wear and in the similar places to Volume 1
Each volume is covered with a buff-coloured dust jacket. The title is printed in black on the front of the co-bound volume and on the spine of the text volume. Each of the plate volumes has Plate printed on the spine of the book.
Volume 1 there are water marks on the spine of the co-bound volume and on the spine of the text and
plate volumes (see photographs for reference)
There is chipping at the top and heel of the spine of the co-bound volume and also chipping on the front
and back covers.
There is a vertical tear on the front cover of approximately 35mm.
There bis a tear on the left bottom of the spine right at the crease approximately 70mm long
Volume 2 is in a similar condition to Volume 1 in respect of chipping and water stains.
On the back cover of the co-bound volume there is a mark running vertically of approximately 175mm.
There is a cut of approximately 110mm in the centre of the back cover.
The dust jackets are in a Very Good condition
Text block is tight and intact. Text is clear and clean.
Plates and maps are clear and crisp with no tearing or discolouring of the maps
