The German Official Account of the War in South Africa - Limited Edition, with 17 Maps
Published: Scripta Africana, Johannesburg, 1986
Edition: Limited Numbered Edition
A superb Limited Edition copy, two volumes in one, published by Scripta Africana (June 1986). This is copy number 394 of 1000, signed by C.Strydom of Scripta Africana on the certificate page. \'The German Official Account of the War in South Africa is probably one of the most significant books written about the Second Anglo-Boer War. The reason is that it was not written by one of the interested parties but by outlookers: trained military observers. It is therefore as objective as one can get in historical writings. It is free of the emotions which one understandably finds in the writings of participants. Scripta Africana is proud to publish these very rare volumes in one book. It is Number III in our Series of rare historical books and I think our members agree that our collection is building up into an impressive and valuable series. The authoritative Mendelssons\' South African Biography on African books says of \'The German Official Account\': \"The work is characterised by the thoroughness which is so prominent a feature of German productions of this class, and despite constant criticisms of the British methods and military tactics, is written in a perfectly fair and unbiased manner.\"(p.590). Book condition: excellent, fine copy, due to the fact that it has been housed in a slip-case, red boards very good, with only some wear to the gilt spine titles, and foxing to end-papers and title page; top edge gilt, contents bright, tight, and clean, total 218pp. plus index. A separate bright red folder contains a full set of 17 detailed individual maps of the battlefields, all in excellent condition (folder spine is faded). The board slip-case is in very good condition, but is worn at the edges with very minor bumping on the corners, and is faded and slightly marked.
