This is the incredible perhaps little known story of the WW1 German cruiser Konigsberg. Konigsberg went on a raiding rampage in the waters off the coast of East Africa 1915, initially wreaking some havoc including sinking an elderly RN warship in port. The British , with the aid of a very antiquated aircraft even by ww1 standards which they used for recon and gunnery spotting, located trapped and shelled the Konigsberg to destruction at anchor up river in the Rufiji delta in what is now the nation of Tanzania. But this was only the beginning of the British feud with this group of naval Germans- most survived the sinking , they unbolted and hauled 10 105mm guns off the wreck of the cruiser,on wheels, and manhandled ashore and cross country, and linking up with 'Askari 'German black colonial troops, remained at large, waging a running & raiding fight through East Africa against the British for the rest of the War, tying down , and repeatedly defeating, sometimes with heavy casualties ,much larger British and colonial forces.
