About the Book
In the Nicaraguan archipelago of Solentiname, a remote cluster of islands in Lake Nicaragua, priest-poet Ernesto Cardenal founded a small lay monastery and cooperative community dedicated to work, art, and faith lived among the poor. Each Sunday, Scripture was read aloud, and the villagers farmers, fishermen, and artisans offered spontaneous reflections on the Gospel. These dialogues, rich in honesty and hope, form The Gospel in Solentiname.
Volume 2 continues this extraordinary project of collective theology, where the biblical word is interpreted through the lived experience of oppression and the longing for liberation. The villagers voices tender, indignant, deeply humane turn the Gospel into a conversation about justice, suffering, and redemption in the midst of material poverty. Cardenals framing presence, both pastoral and poetic, reveals his conviction that divine truth emerges not from hierarchy but from the shared consciousness of the people.
At once devotional, social, and revolutionary, this series became a classic text of Latin American liberation theology and a testament to faith made flesh in community.
