Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, George Braziller, publisher,1971, hardcover, folio, illustrated, 183 pages, 32.2 cms x 43.1 cms x 2.6 cms, condition: as new.
Commissioned by the younger brother of the King of France, The Grandes Heures was finished in 1409, after two years' work by some of the best artists and scribes of the day. This edition is an *enormous* book that reproduces the pages of The Grandes Heures at their original size. These reproductions are exceptionally well done -- the gold shimmers on the page.
The English commentary is almost exclusively on the art. The publisher correctly guessed that nearly everyone would be buying the book to admire the art and few indeed would be the copies sold to those who have aspirations to someday, maybe, in the fullness of time, learn medieval Latin. Too bad for us weirdos!
In my opinion this would be absolutely worth it if you want something gorgeous to sit on your coffee table and occasionally leaf through.
