About the author:

Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918 to 2008)

Born in Kislovodsk, Russia, just after the Bolshevik Revolution, Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn became one of the most courageous and morally powerful voices of the 20th century. A decorated artillery captain in World War II, he was arrested in 1945 for criticising Stalin in private letters and sentenced to eight years in the Gulag. His experiences in the Soviet prison system and internal exile would fuel his lifes work.

Solzhenitsyn wrote with devastating clarity and moral force against totalitarianism. His prose is direct, unflinching, and often prophetic blending documentary precision with deep psychological insight and a profound sense of spiritual and ethical responsibility. He exposed the horrors of the Soviet labour camps while also critiquing Western materialism and moral relativism in his later years.

Major works include:

  • One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) his explosive debut, the first honest portrayal of life in the Gulag published in the USSR
  • The Gulag Archipelago (1973) his monumental three-volume masterpiece, based on hundreds of survivor testimonies; widely regarded as one of the most important books of the 20th century
  • Cancer Ward (1968)
  • The First Circle (1968)
  • The Red Wheel (his epic multi-volume historical novel on the Russian Revolution)

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970, Solzhenitsyn was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974. He lived in the United States before returning to Russia in 1994 after the fall of the USSR. He remains a towering symbol of intellectual resistance to tyranny.

Solzhenitsyns work is essential reading for anyone interested in Russian history, totalitarianism, moral courage, or the power of literature as testimony. His books carry a rare moral weight combining unflinching honesty about evil with a stubborn belief in the human capacity for truth and redemption.
