"The author, a New Zealander who sailed to England in 1940 as a Brigade Major, is most famous for his indomitable spirit as a Prisoner of War, shown by his nine attempts, including five successful escapes, from enemy hands in Libya, Italy and Germany. Twice he got back to the Allied lines. Clifton became Chief Engineer, Thirty Corps, and from the beginning of 1942 until his capture, he commanded 6th N.Z. Brigade. From 1940 until 1942 he took part in the battles fought over the Western Desert and also in the Greek campaign. His first-hand and eye-witness accounts are so detailed that even the most complex desert scraps come vividly to life."
