This detective novel introduces the character Sergeant Scobie Malone, a Sydney police officer. Malone is sent to London by the New South Wales Premier to arrest the Australian High Commissioner, James Quentin, for the murder of his first wife. However, Malone soon discovers that someone is trying to assassinate Quentin due to his involvement in a Vietnam War peace conference1.
As Malone pretends to be part of Quentin's security detail, he uncovers a web of intrigue involving Madame Cholon, a Vietnamese crime figure, and various other characters. Throughout the investigation, Malone develops romantic feelings for Quentin's secretary, Lisa, and begins to suspect Quentin's innocence. The novel is filled with suspense, action, and twists as Malone navigates the dangerous situation.
