There are four aquatint views from drawings by William Bell of Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, they were engraved by Joseph Stadler, best known for his work in Thornton's The Temple of Flora (1798 - 1807). The plates show, among others, the pepper plant, lanseh and rambeh fruits, Philippine glider, common flying dragon, and balabac kanchil. One of the earliest monographs on this country. 19th century diced calf binding. Repairs to the inner and outer joints. New end papers with the older free end paper pasted to the new one. Fabric tape repair to the gutter at the title page. Some tissue repairs to the map, light foxing to the text and a few plates. Third edition, with corrections, additions and plates.
