Born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1892, J.R.R. Tolkien moved to England as a child after his fathers death. He studied at Oxford, served in the Battle of the Somme during World War I, and later became a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English Language and Literature at Oxford. His deep knowledge of mythology, languages, and medieval literature shaped his creation of Middle-earth.
His early success came with The Hobbit (1937), but it was The Lord of the Rings (19541955) that made him a literary phenomenon. Tolkien developed a richly detailed, mythic style that combined epic scope, linguistic invention, and moral depth. He treated fantasy as a serious literary form with its own history, languages, and cosmology.
Deeply influenced by Anglo-Saxon and Norse mythology, Beowulf, and his Catholic faith, Tolkien in turn became one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He profoundly shaped modern fantasy literature and is adjacent to authors like C.S. Lewis, Ursula K. Le Guin, and later figures such as George R.R. Martin, Terry Pratchett, and Patrick Rothfuss. His work helped establish the epic fantasy genre.
