" Catalogue List

Introduction

The catalogue list has been divided into the core collection donated to the gallery by the Anglo American Johannesburg centenary Trust ( cats 1-26) and the collection donated by Udo Horstmann, which includes works previously part of the Witt Collection ( cats 27-93)

The works have been catalogued according to typologies such as figures, vessels, snuff-boxes. It has not been possible to identify specifically the typologies for all the beaded items. Where recognised, typologies such as necklace, bag, headband have been used, in unknown examples a general typology of 'beadwork' is recorded.

Explanation of entries

each entry is set out in the following way

Catalogue No.

Object type- descriptive titles relating to typologies

Medium - The predominant material ( which gives the object its form) is listed first, followed by other materials.

DimensionsFor three-dimensional objects ( eg. headrests, figure carvings): Height x widthx depth ( in cm). For beadwork, the way in which the object was worn was established and measured as : Length x width x Depth (in cm).............

Attribution/Classification - In most instances, classifications have been made using linguistic groupings. \when known, more specific identifications about political groups and/or geographical regions are included.there is a lack of certainty in certain identifications, which reflects the present state of knowledge on some of the objects and it is hoped that bthe information presented will provide the basis for continuing research.
