The neighborhood around Mount Morris Park in New York has deteriorated now, but in the early 1900's it was inhabited by wealthy, respectable families who stabled their carriage horses a few blocks away, and who lived pompously and fashionably in a social world of their own, bounded by the shopping district of 125th Street to the north, Lenox Avenue, to the west, and Madison Avenue to the east. Their pleasures took them farther afield: to Broadway for theaters and restaurants, to Sheepshead Bay for the races, to New Jersey summer resorts for vacations. The adults of the section drove in Central Park and promenaded along the Mall on pleasant Sundays; the children were delighted with the perfect playground in Mount Morris Park. The ruling force in the neighborhood was the Oberdunks; Ma Oberdunk made them so. She was a little taller, stouter, dressier, and wealthier than the other matrons, she helped her husband run the big warehouse on Eighteenth Street, and artfully manipulated the social progress of the family. The adventure begins when Gus Falks, who dabbled in mine stocks and everything that seemed adventurous, attaches himself to her two girls.
