Sigmund Freud (1856 to 1939)
Born Sigismund Schlomo Freud in Freiberg, Moravia (now Příbor, Czech Republic), in 1856 to Jewish parents, Sigmund Freud moved with his family to Vienna as a child. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, initially focusing on neurology before developing the theories of psychoanalysis. His work was shaped by the cultural ferment of fin-de-siècle Vienna and his own self-analysis.
His early success came with The Interpretation of Dreams, which introduced many of his core ideas. Freud developed a revolutionary style of psychological writing that combined clinical observation, literary insight, and bold theoretical speculation. He wrote with clarity and intellectual courage, often using case studies and mythological references.
Deeply influenced by the scientific method, classical literature (especially Sophocles), and thinkers like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, Freud in turn became one of the most influential intellectuals of the 20th century. He profoundly shaped psychology, literature, art, and popular culture, influencing writers such as Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Franz Kafka, and countless others who explored the unconscious, sexuality, and the complexities of the human mind.
