THE JOHANNESBURG SAGA BY JOHN R SHORTEN. FIRST EDITION 1970, HARDCOVER, FULLY INTACT DUST JACKET WITH COME WEAR AND TEAR AS SHOWN IN PICTURE, 1159 PAGES, NO INSCRIPTIONS OR NAMES, IN GOOD CONDITION.
"When the Johannesburg City Council honoured me with its authority to produce a book to commemorate the city's 8oth anniversary in 1966, I had no intention of undertaking a production of the scope of this volume. As the work progressed, however, it became increasingly apparent that a very real need existed for a much more comprehensive record of Johannesburg than the one originally contemplated. To meet that need, a fresh approach was made to the entire work. Hence, The Fohannesburg Saga. Since Johannesburg is the "City of Gold", I have outlined the history of Earth with particular reference to the Witwatersrand and its famous gold reefs; recorded, in as much detail as possible in a work of this kind, the history of gold-mining and of gold metallurgy; and traced the important and often decisive part played by the metal in the affairs of men and nations from the time of Menes to our day. I have described that terrible period in the early 19th century when the lands between the Orange and the Limpopo were all but denuded of their Bantu population, and those momentous events that brought the White man north of the Orange and the Vaal, and set the stage for the discovery of the Witwatersrand Gold Field and the founding of Johannesburg. But for that discovery, but for Johannesburg that burgeoned from a village of stands on the bare veld to a great and pulsating city in the brief span of a few decades, the history of Southern Africa would have been very different." - Dust jacket
