For those whose interest is in the history of South Africa, Kuruman has an honoured place. For many decades, when the Orange River marked the most northerly boundary of known Africa, Kuruman was a far-flung outpost from which explorers, hunters, traders, missionaries and others set out into the trackless interior. As early as 1830, the Kuruman mission station had already become a tiny oasis of civilization in the heart of the wilderness, from which eager travelers would set out and to which they would gladly return to rest and refit.
