Four German soldiers, caught in Rumania at the end of the war, spend months in desperate flight through the impassable Carpathians, vainly hoping to get backto Germany. Half-starved, they live like wolves, ruthlessly hunted by the Russians. Two girls help them; Vera connected with the Rumanian partisans, and Sonya, a farmer's daughter in a mountain village. Three of the Germans are captured, but Michael, a boy of eighteen, holds out.
