Until his resignation in 1986 the author was the leader of the opposition in the all-white South African Parliament. Initially this book is a justification of his participation in the tri-cameral system, established to co-opt the leaders of the Indian and Coloured communities by giving them a parliamentary crumb. Once the author begins the section 'Adieu Parliament' this becomes the story of how he reached the conclusion that 'conventional constitutional changes as an option is no longer available . . . .' It is easy to be critical of Van Zyl Slabbert's blindness or his naivete in believing that those in power would voluntarily relinquish it. It is important to take seriously his journey to this understanding. A valuable, well-written addition to the literature about South Africa for the informed layperson.
