The 1916 Battle of the Somme was a brutal, five-month Allied offensive on the Western Front during World War I, fought from July 1 to November 18, 1916, between British, French, and German forces.

Intended to relieve pressure on the French at Verdun, the battle resulted in massive casualties for minimal territorial gains.

The first day, July 1, was the bloodiest day in British military history, with over 57,000 casualties and 19,000 fatalities, as soldiers advanced into heavy machine-gun fire.

The battle became a symbol of the futility of trench warfare and is remembered for its staggering human cost.
