Earl Mountbatten's father, Prince Louis of Battenberg, was appointed First Sea Lord by Winston Churchill, but had to resign in 1914, because of anti-German feelings in the UK (Battenberg was born in Germany). Half a century later his son, Earl Mountbatten, was appointed First Sea Lord by Winston Churchill (Churchill's last act of office). Mountbatten was a key figure in the Allied Victory in 1945 and, as the last Viceroy, also presided over Indian Independence.
