A biography by Ian Duncan Colvin, who, in addition to his many other works, also wrote the original 72 page introduction to Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography (1910).

In 1896 Dr. Leander Starr Jameson invaded the Transvaal in an attempt to overthrow the government of President Kruger's South African Republic. The Government, however, was very much aware of his plans and, upon his commando's approach of the city, was met by the Republican Forces at Doornkop (Thorn Hill), just outside of Johannesburg. Facing  overwhelming resistance Jameson and his Raiders were forced to capitulate. This incident in South African history became known as The Jameson Raid. Despite his early failure Jameson had a successful political career in later life and became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony in 1904, holding office until 1908. Jameson was created a baronet in 1911.
