The Life of the Rt. Hon. Cecil John Rhodes 1853-1902 (2 Volumes)

Lewis Michell

Published by Edward Arnold, London, 1910

Written by a close friend, Sir Lewis Michell aimed to produce the first full biography of Rhodesfrom his birth in 1853 to his death in 1902. Michell explicitly intended to counteract controversy and criticisms by offering a detailed, sympathetic portrayal of Rhodes as one of the greatest Englishmen of the Victorian era, while acknowledging both his faults and his virtues

Volume I: Early Years & Rise to Power

Early life in England and South Africa: Born in Bishops Stortford, Rhodes was frail and sent to South Africa at 17 for health reasons. He began his involvement in the diamond industry at Kimberley in the early 1870s

Founding De Beers: Consolidating diamond claims, Rhodes established DeBeers in 1888, ultimately gaining a global monopoly on the diamond trade .

Political ascent: Elected to the Cape Parliament by age 27 (1881), Rhodes later became Prime Minister in 1890. He enacted policies like the Glen Grey Act and franchise restrictions that disenfranchised Black Africans, laying groundwork for British colonial control

Volume II: Empire-Building, Jameson Raid & Legacy

Imperial ambition: Rhodes placed great emphasis on expanding British influence in Southern Africa, founding the British South Africa Company in 1889, and securing mineral concessions that led to the colonization of territories later named Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia)

Jameson Raid and political downfall: In late 1895, the failed Jameson Raida botched attempt to incite rebellion in the Transvaalforced Rhodes to resign as premier in January 1896. His reputation suffered irreparable damage, although he continued his colonial pursuits

Final years and the Rhodes Scholarships: During the Second Boer War (18991902), Rhodes assisted in the Siege of Kimberley but saw his health decline. He died in March 1902 and bequeathed much of his fortune to establish the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxfordensuring a lasting educational legacy
