About this Item
Fine as new condition with small name on first free endpaper. The very scarce first edition first impression of a book that was pulled from all bookseller outlets very soon after publication after the publisher was sued as a result of the high profile individuals pointed to in this inflammatory book. According to some, the de facto leader of apartheid South Africa was not P.W. Botha but Magnus Malan, who controlled state security and without which no important decision was made. He ran the defence force as his personal fiefdom. What emerges from a reading of the book is that in 1987 a major scandal arose when two individuals died alone by gunshot in quick succession: Dave Allen, a prominent businessman and legendary shipwreck salvager ( the Sacramento and the Doddington ), and John Wiley a Nationalist government minister and the only English speaker in the cabinet. Wiley, an obsessive note maker, left no suicide note and the key to the locked door in which he died was allegedly never found. Both were allegedly in contact with the police shortly before their deaths and Allen was due to appear in court on the morning of his death on an isolated beach, as a result of an investigation by the author of this book, then a Port Elizabeth policeman. The allegation is that the deceased Allen and Wiley were involved in a paedophile ring which used the restricted Bird Island near Port Elizabeth as their base. What is alleged is that Malan and another Nationalist minister visited Bird Island by helicopter for "fishing trips" with Allen and Wiley. The author of the book also died alone by gunshot wound shortly after the book was released to the public and the book was pulled, with apologies also appearing in newspapers.
