Published by Richard Clay & Sons, Limited.  Reprinted May 1906 (1st Edition March 1906), 432 pages.

Hardcover, blue cloth, gold lettering and gold pattern on the spine.

Cover: good condition, some stains on the back cover, spine looking very good, edges of covers slightly worn. Spine shows shelf wear. Mesh slightly exposed pages 2-3 (see images)

~

During the First World War, Dent began using an imitation gold leaf on the spines. This spine design was only done 1915-1927.  The book has a standard cloth bindings with flat spines, showing section categories and colors. There is a an embossed Dent floral icon on the cover.

Reginald L. Knowles designed the endpapers used on Everyman's Library books until 1935. The pale yellow endpapers illustrate the figure of Good Deeds from the medieval play Everyman, facing her sister Knowledge's pledge, which is the series motto: "Everyman, I will go with thee and be thy guide, in thy most need to go by thy side."

Has an Advertisement Page before the title page.

Title Pages: An ornate frontispiece and title-page reflects the style of William Morris and is one of the most distinctive elements of early Everyman's titles. Thirteen different corresponding designs and quotes were created for the thirteen sections in the series.

" Rhys and Dent had the vision of a large collection of thy love for romance books. Great books of the world, in a handsome edition that would be affordable by the common man. Both also realized that many difficulties would have to be surmounted. "We were aiming, you see," Rhys wrote in 1932, "at something almost impracticable, almost quixotic, in this transcendental enterprise."(everymanslibrarycollecting.com)
