Published in the early years of serious academic study of same-sex relationships, The Male Couple was a pioneering longitudinal investigation into the lives of gay male partners. Drawing upon extensive interviews conducted over several years, the authors examine how relationships form, develop, mature and endure.
The study explores questions of commitment, intimacy, sexuality, family relationships, financial arrangements, conflict, ageing and long-term partnership. At a time when relatively little research focused on stable same-sex relationships, the book challenged prevailing assumptions and sought to document the realities of everyday life among male couples.
Part social research, part relationship study and part historical document, the work remains of interest to readers of psychology, sociology, gender studies and LGBTQ+ history.
About the Authors
David P. McWhirter was a psychiatrist and researcher whose work focused on human relationships and sexuality. Andrew M. Mattison was a psychologist and sexologist who collaborated extensively with McWhirter in the study of long-term male partnerships. Together they produced one of the earliest substantial examinations of male same-sex relationships based on extended personal interviews and longitudinal observation.
