In the world view of the San, the eland is the favourite creation of the mantis; in the mind of a young Kalahari hunter it is the key game target. The mantis gave the eland its colours, the hunter hopes by killing it to earn a wife. This sets up a timeless conflict between creator and hunter. The eland is the symbol of wife, hunting is the euphemism for sexual relations. Rock paintings are essentially depictions of people and game animals. On this journey, following the San, we view the paintings and try to see them through the eyes of the painters. (From back cover)
