The Marquis de Custine left his native Paris in the summer of 1839 and journeyed to Russia to substantiate his believe in government by aristocracy and to seek arguments against representative government. He returned with the words: "Whoever has well examined that country will be content to live anywhere else." The author concludes that Custine's perceptions applies closer to the truth today, with today's Moscow but Old Muscovy of the tsars.

First published 1972 by Hutchinson, London. Condition: Fair to good. Top right corner of first flyleaf cut off. Foxing on top of book-block. Outside: Damaged piece at top of jacket and hardcover.
